Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Steady and managing your money in NZ.
Using Steady
What is Steady?+
Steady is a personal finance app built for New Zealand. It connects to your bank accounts via Akahu (NZ's open banking platform), automatically tracks your spending, and uses AI to answer plain-English questions about your money — like "How much did I spend on food this week?" or "Am I on track for my savings goal?"
How does Steady connect to my bank?+
Steady uses Akahu, New Zealand's regulated open banking platform. When you connect, you're redirected to Akahu's secure login page — Steady never sees your bank password. Akahu connects to ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Westpac, Kiwibank, and more. You can revoke access anytime.
Is Steady free?+
Steady has a free tier that includes 1 bank connection, 90 days of transaction history, 1 savings goal, and 5 AI questions per month. The Pro plan ($7.99/month) unlocks unlimited bank connections, full history, unlimited goals, and unlimited AI queries.
How does the AI assistant work?+
Steady's AI (powered by Anthropic's Claude) can answer questions about your finances, recategorise transactions, create budgets, set goals, and flag spending patterns. It sees your financial data (spending, goals, bills) but never your name, email, or account numbers. It cannot give investment advice — for that, consult a licensed financial adviser.
Can I use Steady on my phone?+
Yes. Steady is a mobile-first web app that works on any phone browser. A native iOS app is coming soon to the App Store, with Android to follow. The web version supports haptic feedback, push notifications, and can be installed as a home screen app.
Banking
What is open banking?+
Open banking lets you securely share your bank data with trusted third-party apps. Instead of giving an app your bank login, the bank provides a secure API. In NZ, this is facilitated by Akahu, which is regulated by the Financial Markets Authority (FMA). Read more in our blog post about open banking.
Which NZ banks does Steady support?+
Steady supports all major NZ banks via Akahu: ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Westpac, Kiwibank, TSB, SBS, The Co-operative Bank, Heartland, and Rabobank. Investment platforms like Sharesies, Hatch, and InvestNow are also supported.
Can Steady move my money or make payments?+
No. Steady has read-only access to your accounts. It can see your balances and transactions but cannot make payments, transfers, or any changes to your bank accounts.
KiwiSaver
Can Steady track my KiwiSaver?+
Yes. If your KiwiSaver provider is connected via Akahu (most are), Steady shows your KiwiSaver balance alongside your other accounts. You can see your total net worth including bank accounts, investments, and KiwiSaver in one place.
Can Steady recommend a KiwiSaver fund?+
No. Steady is not a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FAP) under NZ law. We can show you your current KiwiSaver balance and general educational information, but we cannot recommend specific funds or investment strategies. For fund advice, use the free sorted.org.nz KiwiSaver fund finder or consult a licensed adviser.
Privacy & Security
Is my financial data safe with Steady?+
Yes. All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest (AES-256-GCM for sensitive tokens). Your bank credentials are never stored — they stay with Akahu. Steady complies with the NZ Privacy Act 2020. You can export or delete all your data at any time from Settings.
What data does Steady send to AI?+
When you use the AI assistant, Steady sends financial context: spending totals, category breakdowns, recent transactions (merchant + amount, not account numbers), goals, and bills. Your name, email, and bank account numbers are never sent. Anthropic (the AI provider) does not train on API data.
Can I delete my data?+
Yes. Go to Settings > Delete Account. This permanently removes all your data from Steady, revokes your Akahu bank connections, and deletes your Clerk authentication account. You can also export your data first via Settings > Export Data.
Billing
How do I upgrade to Pro?+
Go to Settings > Subscription and choose the Pro plan. Payment is handled securely by Stripe. You can pay monthly ($7.99/month) or annually (save 20%). Cancel anytime — you'll keep Pro features until the end of your billing period.
Can I cancel anytime?+
Yes. Cancel from Settings > Subscription > Manage. Your Pro features continue until the end of your current billing period. After that, you'll drop to the free tier. No cancellation fees.
