Car Insurance in NZ 2026: What It Costs and How to Pay Less
What Kiwis typically pay for car insurance in 2026, what drives the price, comprehensive versus third party, and the few levers that actually lower a premium without losing cover.

Quick answer: Most NZ drivers pay roughly $800–$1,500 a year for comprehensive car insurance in 2026, $400–$700 for third party, fire and theft, and $200–$400 for third party only. Younger drivers, city parking and higher-value cars sit at the top. The biggest saving is getting two or three quotes at every renewal.
Kia ora. Car insurance is a bill most people pay without checking whether it is still fair. Here is roughly what it costs, what moves the price, and how to bring it down without leaving yourself exposed.
How much does car insurance cost in NZ in 2026?
Premiums vary a lot by driver, car and region. As a rough guide:
- Comprehensive: about $800–$1,500 a year for most drivers, more for young drivers or valuable cars
- Third party, fire and theft: about $400–$700 a year
- Third party only: about $200–$400 a year
A 22-year-old in a city with a sporty car can pay several times what a 45-year-old in a regional town pays for the same cover. Treat these as ranges to sanity-check a quote, not a price list.
What drives the premium?
- Age and driving history. Younger drivers and recent claims push it up the most.
- The car. Its value, repair cost and theft risk all count.
- Where you live and park. City streets cost more than a regional garage.
- Your excess. A higher excess lowers the premium, because you carry more of any claim.
Comprehensive or third party?
Comprehensive covers your own car as well: crashes, theft and weather damage. Third party only covers the damage you cause to other people's property.
If your car is worth more than a few thousand dollars, comprehensive usually makes sense. For an old runaround you could replace from savings, third party is often the better use of the money.
How can I pay less without dropping cover?
- Shop around at renewal. Insurers often let prices creep for existing customers. Two or three quotes a year takes about ten minutes.
- Raise your excess if you have an emergency fund that could cover it.
- Bundle policies. Home, contents and car with one insurer often earns a multi-policy discount.
- Insure what you need. Dropping comprehensive on a low-value car can save hundreds.
Remember the renewal date
Car insurance is one of the annual bills that catch people out, especially when it renews as a single lump. Steady picks up insurance payments from your bank feed and shows when the next one is due, so a renewal or a price rise does not arrive as a surprise.
The bottom line
Comprehensive cover for most Kiwi drivers costs $800–$1,500 a year in 2026. Get fresh quotes every renewal: it is the same cover, often for less.
